Farewell to Otis Chandler

No self respecting publication dealing with journalism – whether with the issue overall or with environmental journalism specifically – can ignore the passing on February 27 of Otis Chandler, one of the most influential and most respected newspaper publishers in the country's history.

Publisher of The Los Angeles Times from 1960 to 1980, Chandler turned a once-mediocre newspaper into one of the best in the country, a standing now called into doubt, in the minds of some newspaper observers, as a result of severe internal financial issues the paper (like so many others) is facing.

Chandler was a giant in the field, a field increasingly populated by dwarfs in sheer comparison and contrast.

All journalists holding true to the great promise of their field may celebrate his journalistic accomplishments and pause a moment to mourn and respect his passing (see the L.A. Times' obituary on Chandler). The lengthy obit is bylined by the late and highly respected Times media critic David Shaw, who had filed a draft before his death last August, with recent reporting by Mitchell Landsberg.
