SEJ 16th Annual Conference
October 25-29 in Burlington, Vt.
The Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ's) 16th annual conference will feature a typically full substantive agenda in Burlington, Vt., October 25 to 29 as the group seeks to capture the spirit of fall in the "Green Mountain State."
Along with a full day "environmental law Workshop for Journalists" on Wednesday, October 25 at Vermont Law School and a series of nine full- and half-day tours the next day, the agenda calls for addressing issues ranging from climate change and covering disasters to dealing with government secrecy, sustainability, and building a successful blog.
Among the confirmed headline names announced in the SEJ brochure promoting the conference: Senator Pat Leahy (D-Vermont) and NASA climate scientists James Hansen, both on a government secrecy luncheon plenary; New Yorker climate change author Elizabeth Kolbert, author Bill McKibben, and New York Times and Sacramento Bee environmental reporters Andy Revkin and Tom Knudson. The SEJ brochure qualifies as "invited" Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai, and ice cream entrepreneurs Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield of Ben & Jerry's.
The full conference registration fee is $170 for members registering before August 15 and $200 after that date. The nonmember fees for those same dates are $700 and $750, and students can register for $65. Some events involve additional registration fees. The primary conference hotel and site of most of the meetings is the Sheraton Burlington Hotel (802-865-6000), with single/double room rates of $87. You can register for a hotel room now, and get up-to-date information on the conference agenda at SEJ's website.
