The Complexities of Issuing Fish Advisories
Great Lakes Radio Consortium; January 6-7, 2003

This two-part package by Lester Graham, with a followup, two-parter dated Jan 13, gives almost 20 minutes to the subject of fish contamination -- quite a major piece for either public or commercial radio. Graham does an unusually good job of putting an environmental issue in a variety of demographic and cultural contexts. He goes right out on the jetty and talks to Asian-American, Native American, and African-American fishermen, and he discusses the effects of mercury or PCBs on children and pregnant women. He also achieves a rare balance with this story, never letting his audience lose sight of the health and nutritional benefits, and the risks, of fish in the diet. Web readers can hear the story by browsing (See: http://www.glrc.org/story.php3?story_id=1768) but a transcript is also available.)
