States, Paint Industry Agree on Lead Warnings The Washington Post; May 13, 2003 Uniform stickers and labels on new paint cans and warnings about home paint renovation efforts will be required under an agreement reached by most state attorneys general and the National Paint and Coatings Association. The agreement is significant in that it was accomplished without litigation but significant too because holdout Rhode Island, which has sued the industry for alleged harm as a "public nuisance," did not sign: "an empty gesture," as Rhode Island's Attorney General described the pact. The new agreement leaves open issues of liability for damage from lead paint, and states signing it remain free to bring future lawsuits, Marc Kaufman reports. The industry says it will offer training on lead paint removal and will set up a program of discount sales and leases of special cleaners and masks for use in removing lead paint.
