Five-part Series on Tillamook and Clatsop State Forests
The Daily Astorian (Astoria, OR); July 11–17, 2003

Reporter Benjamin Romano takes a thorough look at many facets of these two state forests that total some half-million acres of Oregon's Coast Range and have a major impact on life in the state. He doesn't look at them merely from the perspectives of the logging industry and the environmentalists -- but paints a broader picture that includes many other uses and interest groups as well -- local governments, fishers, bicyclists, horseback riders, other recreationists, and, of course, all the people whose drinking water comes from these watersheds. The series comes at an opportune time, since the Oregon Department of Forestry is trying to complete revisions to its management plan for the forests that provide something for everybody. It gives a real feel for how logging has provided jobs to support families there for generations. In a place where logging provides an important share of the revenues that local government needs to provide schools, prisons, and much else, the political pressure for more logging is intense.
