Chesapeake Summer [Series] The Washington Post; All summer 2002 OK, so Post reporters need paid vacations, too. This charming, readable, interesting, provocative, and wide-ranging series is still on-line for those who can't quite accept that Labor Day has come and gone. And a good excuse for the Post to cover, not only the best vacation spot but also the most important ecosystem in the region. Included was a story by Christian Davenport on efforts to rebuild Poplar Island, which washed away decades ago, as a wildlife sanctuary. And Monte Reel's piece, which consisted largely of writing down quotes as charter boat Captain Eldridge Meredith philosophized. Or the now-rarely-told story, by Darragh Johnson and Nelson Hernandez, of that gargantuan marvel of modern engineering, the 4.35-mile long Chesapeake Bay Bridge, which in the 1950s "brought the world to the Eastern Shore." Or others on the vistas that draw artists, the plague of jellyfish, the spiritual haven of a secluded island inn -- as well as the mundane ("Boaters' Bodies Found") and the political ("Underwater Cable Plan Called Risky"). The cool part is that the Post's new media edition allows them to build "special sections" out of ongoing coverage.
