Global Warming, Localized Reporting: Journalists Focus on Microcosms of Planet's Changing Climate System
"Think globally, report locally," is a tip that environmental journalists
might derive from a recent White House report.
Departing from its previous emphasis on the scientific uncertainties
surrounding human influence on global warming, the Bush
administration late in August issued the new report to Congress,
identifying manmade pollution as the only likely reason for rising
temperatures in recent decades.
The same document also cited federal grassland studies in
Colorado to warn about possible damage to agriculture as one
offshoot of a changing climate.
It was one more reminder -- just the latest in many -- that a warming
world will be a decidedly local story for journalists to cover. A
flurry of recent articles in a variety of publications demonstrate that
a good number of reporters and editors don't need reminding.
