Study Finds Warming Trend in Arctic Linked to Emissions
The New York Times; Oct. 29, 2004

Andrew C. Revkin, as usual, scoops other newspapers on the climate change beat. Here, he reports on "the first thorough assessment of a decades-long Arctic warming trend," showing that the region "is undergoing profound changes, including sharp retreats of glaciers and sea ice, thawing of permafrost, and shifts in ocean and atmospheric conditions that are likely to harm native communities, wildlife and economic activities while offering some benefits, as well." Revkin wrote on the leaked executive summary of the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment. He reported that some sources in Europe think "that publication had been delayed in part by the Bush administration because of the political contentiousness of global warming," a claim denied by the authors of the study.
