Librarians' Index to the Internet (LII)
(See www.lii.org)

The Librarians' Index to the Internet (LII) provides more than 14,000 Internet resources to public libraries users, resources that have been evaluated and selected by librarians for their usefulness. In addition, a weekly update, LII New This Week, is mailed free of charge and describes the most recent resources added to LII.

The broad topics include:

  • Arts & Humanities
  • Business
  • Computers
  • Education
  • Government
  • Health
  • Home
  • Law
  • Media
  • People
  • Ready Reference & Quick Facts
  • Recreation
  • Regional
  • Science
  • Society & Social Science

There are two categories in particular that are relevant for environment reporters. The first, Health, includes subcategories that might be useful such as:

  1. Children's Health
  2. Diseases & Conditions
  3. Public Health and Safety
  4. Research
  5. Statistics

The second resource, Science, includes relevant topics such as:

  1. Earth Sciences
  2. Environment
  3. Life Sciences
  4. Marine Sciences
  5. Nuclear Energy
  6. Plants
  7. Stem Cells
  8. Weather

To keep the site current, every website entered in the LII database is reviewed at least twice with an active weeding program before it goes "live." Each week, LII staff and contributors identify Web resources and enter draft records into the development database. These records are then reviewed by the librarian-editors to ensure they meet LII criteria.

Some of the criteria for the sites include authority; scope and audience; content; design, function; shelf life. Other criteria includes:

  • Availability – Sites that are fee-based or sell a product are not included unless it offers important informational content for free.
  • Credibility – Site author(s) should be qualified to provide the content.
  • Authorship – Content should be competently written, with few if any grammatical or spelling errors.
  • External links – For all sites, links should lead to appropriate content. For directories, the majority of the links should work.
  • Legality – The author should be legally entitled to present the content within copyright and fair use guidelines.
