Environmental Integrity Project
(See http://environmentalintegrity.org/page1.cfm)

The Environmental Integrity Project (EIP), founded in March 2002 with support from the Rockefeller Family Fund, is a nonprofit organization that advocates more effective enforcement of environmental laws.

EIP was founded by Eric Schaeffer, who had directed EPA’s Office of Regulatory Enforcement until 2002, when he very publicly resigned expressing frustration with Bush Administration Clean Air Act enforcement policies. Schaeffer has since been widely quoted in various news media reports on environmental enforcement trends and policies.

The EIP site provides analyses of how failures to enforce or implement environmental laws increases pollution and affects the public's health. It works to increase accountability for failing to enforce or comply with environmental laws, and it works with local communities to obtain the protection of environmental laws.

Issues tracked by EIP include:

Clean Air

  • New Source Review/Coal-Fired Power Plants
  • Refineries/ Accidents
  • Animal Feeding Operations
  • Air Monitoring

Clean Water Act

  • Enforcement

For these issues, the EIP website provides documents including:

  • EIP Reports
  • Fact Sheets
  • Letters
  • Statements
  • Testimony

Its web site also has a section entitled "Newsroom" that includes:

  • News articles
  • Press releases
  • Congressional testimony
  • Op-eds

A "Community Outreach" section provides a list of links to other websites that provide basic data about air quality, water quality, enforcement, and compliance. It also has a section on what citizens can do if they suspect a facility is illegally emitting pollution.
