Gianna Savoie is a documentary film producer and writer, living in New York City, where she has worked on the award-winning PBS series NATURE since 1997. Holding a Master's degree in Environmental Biology, she has spearheaded a host of conservation and environmental justice initiatives throughout North America and in Central and South America. Savoie's background in science, paired with her love of filmmaking, has led her high over Himalayan peaks and deep through the Amazon basin to explore -- in direct ways -- the connections between humans and their natural world. She has initiated dialogues on issues ranging from whaling rights with elders of the Makah tribe in the Pacific Northwest, to the deforestation crisis with loggers in southeastern Brazil, to land stewardship with villagers in the jungles of Belize, where she also developed an Ethno-botany museum and wrote and illustrated a book on the use of rainforest plants. Savoie is a member of the Society of Environmental Journalists and a member of the Board of Directors for the international organization, Filmmakers for Conservation, which uses the power of film and media to promote the value of wilderness. Most recently, she has written and co-produced a one-hour high-definition natural history documentary on Death Valley, scheduled to air on PBS in January 2006.
