Science Communications
and the News Media Workshops
THE WORKSHOP SERIES:
University of Rhode Island (Workshop 1)
Scripps Institute (Workshop 2)
University of Washington (Workshop 3)
Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University (Workshop 4)
University of California-Berkeley (Workshop 5)
Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (Workshop 6)

This series of workshops is designed to address not a particular "breaking news" development or issue, but rather the process - the successes and the frustrations - of communications between scientists and journalists in an effort to inform the public on complex scientific issues.

The workshops delineate and respect the "inviolable principles" (practices, mores, standards, traditions) of responsible journalism and of outstanding science. Participants identify impediments and obstacles - "common enemies" - to improved science communication. They identify obstacles that serve neither effective journalism nor responsible science, but which nonetheless may impede communication between those disciplines and, therefore, reporting of science news to the public.

A final product of this series of workshops will be a comprehensive report on science communications and the mass media. [ More ]
